What Are Hydrosols?

Georgia

Hydrosols are herbal waters produced through steam distillation of plant materials, where both essential oils and water are created.

While essential oils are very concentrated, hydrosols are mild and perfect for everyday use. They carry the plant's essence and therapeutic properties in a diluted form, making them suitable for all skin types.

The difference between a hydrosol and a floral water is that hydrosols are distilled from herbal material, whereas floral waters are a mixture of water and essential oil or fragrance oil.

Hydrosols contain more therapeutic value than just the diluted essential oil, and are a far more sustainable option when compared to a floral waters.

Hydrosol Benefits

  • Hydrosols can provide a beautiful source moisture to the skin.

This is especially important for those who mainly use oils and balms, which are anhydrous products (containing no water) and therefore don't have hydrating benefits.

  • Hydrosols can help restore the skins balance after cleansing.

As natural toners, hydrosols assist in refining pores and preparing the skin for better absorption of serums, oils and moisturisers.

  • Hydrosols are well-known for their soothing and refreshing properties, which will of course vary depending on the type, offering a wide variety of options for all skin conditions and concerns.

  • In addition to skin benefits, hydrosols offer a beautiful, subtle and therapeutic aroma. The plant essences can enhance your mood and calm the nervous system.

Have you tried a hydrosol face mist?

My personal favorites are rose, chamomile, rosemary, kunzea and sandalwood.
